Autism by GreenDayGirl18 Autism by GreenDayGirl18
I have a confession to make: I have autism. I've been diagnosed when I was about 2 years old. All my life I've been waiting for answers and searching for it, the answer to this question: who am I? I'm not just a kid with autism. It's only half of who I am. As time goes on nowadays, I'm starting to find my answer bit by bit but I still have a long way to go. I know for one thing is that I do not want autism to be cured. It's not a disease. I support autism awareness. April is autism awareness month. So I'm somewhat celebrating by creating this piece here. It's okay to be different.

by all means celebrate awareness, just don't do it the way the blasted people at $peaks do it. they've hijacked the movement.

You mean Autism Speaks? Yeah, I do not support them. They have a habit of making us out to be monsters and burdens to society and the fact they do not have one person on the spectrum as a spokesperson.

have you ever heard of The Autistic Self Advocacy Network, Autism Women's Network, Autism Society of America, Autism Now Center, AutismHWY.com, GRASP (Global Regional Asperger's Syndrome Partnership), Autism Parenting Magazine, Council for Autism and Neurodiversity, Naturally Autistic ANCA, Autreat and The Golden Hat Foundation? all of those organizations are different from Speaks because they all oppose a cure

I think my mother and I subscribed to their pages on Facebook and I'm glad. I honestly do not want to find a cure in my case because it kinda puts the emphasis of it being a disease when it is not and it's not really for anyone to say if there were such a cure if I would be as they would say "normal". And I don't want anyone to take away how I see the world and how I hear and feel things because to me, it's a gift.

As someone with Asperger's Syndrome it fills me with a humble pride to see anything like this on the internet...Especially when done in such a creative way. Thank you for sharing this with all of us and never forget that you are never alone.
